Which Social Networks People Actually Use in Different Countries in 2026
Facebook is not the default everywhere. WhatsApp, Telegram, LINE, WeChat, and KakaoTalk win whole countries. A map of feeds vs messengers - and what that means if you sell across borders.
A lot of “international social strategy” is still a Facebook page plus Instagram, copied from a US playbook. That playbook is wrong in Kyiv, São Paulo, Tokyo, and Guangzhou - for different reasons. The feed people scroll and the chat they answer are often not the same app. If you pick the wrong one, ads look fine and nobody replies.
Figures below are a 2025-mid-2026 snapshot: GWI and DataReportal for the world, Socis (March 2026) for Ukraine. Sources disagree on exact percentages because some count “used last month,” some count app opens, some count ad reach. The ranking by country is stable enough to choose a channel.
1. The global picture: Meta and YouTube, then a local messenger
About 5.8 billion social identities exist worldwide - roughly 70% of the population. An adult internet user touches about seven platforms a month. Nobody lives in one app.
In GWI’s survey of internet users 16+, Facebook still leads self-declared monthly use (~56%), then YouTube (~55%), Instagram (~55%), WhatsApp (~54%). Messenger and TikTok sit around 36%. Drop China and Russia - where Western apps are blocked or limited - and the top four jump above 70%. Similarweb’s app-open data often puts YouTube first: people say Facebook, they tap YouTube.
- Facebook / Instagram: still the default ad network outside China. Weak as a daily chat in much of Europe and Latin America.
- YouTube: the universal video layer. Tutorials, reviews, news. Rarely where a purchase closes.
- TikTok: young and discovery. Strong reach, weak as a support inbox unless you already run a shop there.
- X (Twitter) and Threads: niche. Media, tech, politics. Not a mass channel in most countries, including Ukraine (~1-2%).
2. The split that matters: feed vs messenger
Content and closing a deal live in different apps. Instagram can bring the lead. The reply happens in WhatsApp in Madrid, Telegram in Kyiv, LINE in Osaka, WeChat in Shenzhen. A “contact us on Instagram” button loses people who never open DMs.
- WhatsApp: the default chat in 100+ countries - most of the EU, UK, Latin America, India, large parts of Africa and the Middle East. In Brazil it is closer to infrastructure than an app.
- WeChat: China. Chat, pay, mini programs, government services. Western networks are not a substitute.
- LINE: Japan, Thailand, Taiwan - near-total saturation. KakaoTalk: South Korea, same story. Zalo: Vietnam. Messenger: still first in the Philippines and parts of North America.
- Telegram: Eastern Europe, much of the post-Soviet space, parts of the Middle East and Central Asia. About a billion users globally - smaller than WhatsApp, often the only chat that matters locally. iMessage / RCS: the US default; WhatsApp is secondary there.
3. Country map: what ranks first
Read “first” as the app you must not skip - not the only one. YouTube and Instagram appear almost everywhere as a second or third layer.
- United States, Canada, Australia: YouTube + Instagram + Facebook for content. Chat: iMessage / RCS and Messenger. TikTok and Snapchat for under 30. WhatsApp is not the national inbox.
- Germany, France, Spain, Italy, UK, Netherlands: WhatsApp is how people write to a shop. Instagram and YouTube for show. Facebook still reaches 35+. TikTok for younger discovery.
- Brazil, Mexico, and most of Latin America: WhatsApp first, then Instagram / Facebook / YouTube. Skip WhatsApp and you skip the market.
- India, Indonesia: WhatsApp + YouTube + Instagram / Facebook. Telegram exists; it is not the default.
- China: WeChat + Douyin + Weibo / Kuaishou. Do not plan a Facebook campaign and hope for a VPN audience.
- Japan: LINE, then YouTube, Instagram, X (still stronger than in the West). South Korea: KakaoTalk, then YouTube, Instagram, TikTok. Vietnam: Zalo first.
- Russia: VK + Telegram; Instagram and Facebook are restricted. YouTube still exists with caveats. Do not copy a Moscow stack onto Ukraine.
4. Ukraine: Telegram first, then video and Facebook
Socis (12-18 March 2026) asked which networks people use most, multiple answers allowed. Only 7% said none.
- Telegram 58% - the only platform above half the sample. Internews (2025) put it even higher for communication (~81%) and news (~72%).
- YouTube 39%, Facebook 33%, Viber 29%, Instagram 21%, TikTok 19%. X and Threads ~1-2%.
- News: ~49% from Telegram and Viber channels; ~44% from Facebook / Instagram / X; 32% YouTube; 11% TikTok. A Ukrainian SMB that is only on Instagram is missing the inbox where the country actually lives.
5. How I would pick channels for a business
Do not start with “we need to be on all networks.” Start with where the buyer already talks - then one feed for proof.
- One home you own: a site or a Mini App. Feeds get limited. Messengers change ToS. The page with price, proof, and a pay or book button is the asset.
- One inbox that matches the country: Telegram in Ukraine, WhatsApp in the EU and LATAM, LINE / Kakao / WeChat / Zalo where they are the OS. Automate that inbox (bot, payments, booking) instead of stuffing five DMs.
- One or two feeds for proof: Instagram or TikTok if the offer is visual; YouTube if it needs a demo; Facebook if buyers are 35+ or B2B-local. LinkedIn is a separate B2B job, not a consumer channel.
- If you sell in two regions, duplicate the inbox, not the whole content machine. A Ukrainian shop adding EU clients needs WhatsApp (or a site form) besides Telegram - not a second TikTok strategy from scratch.
Conclusion: put the shop where the country already talks
The 2026 map is simple if you split the job. Almost every market watches YouTube and some mix of Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. The chat that closes the order is local: WhatsApp, Telegram, LINE, KakaoTalk, WeChat, Zalo, or iMessage. Treat those as different products, not as “social.”
I build the owned piece - Next.js sites, Telegram Mini Apps, payment bots - and wire them to the inbox the customer already has open. If you are entering a new country or tired of answering the same Direct ten times a day, write via the form: we will pick one messenger, one feed, and a page that can take the order without a screenshot of a card number.
