Full Stack UI/UX & AI Engineer: What the Role Means and Why It Is Mine

One engineer who carries a product from UX flows and Figma to Next.js, the backend and AI features. What the role covers, how it differs from neighbouring roles, and when it pays off.

What is a Full Stack UI/UX & AI Engineer?

A Full Stack UI/UX & AI Engineer is one person who owns a product feature end to end: the user flow and the interface design, the frontend code, the backend and database behind it, and the AI functionality on top. It is the title I use on Upwork, because it describes how I actually work.

The point is not to know a little of everything. The point is that design decisions, code and AI behaviour are made by the same person, so nothing gets lost between handoffs.

Why I work this way

I have been building web products for clients on Upwork since 2018, for more than eight years. I started with pixel-perfect frontend, then took on backends, databases and infrastructure, and in recent years most of my projects include AI agents, chatbots and LLM integrations.

Along the way I noticed that the most expensive problems are not in the code. They appear when a screen is designed that the API cannot support, or when an AI feature works technically but users do not understand what it is doing. Owning all three layers closes that gap.

How it differs from neighbouring roles

The role overlaps with several specialists, but it is not a replacement for a whole team:

  • Full-stack developer: builds the frontend and backend, but usually receives ready-made designs and does not shape the UX.
  • UI/UX designer: designs flows and interfaces in Figma, but usually does not ship the production code.
  • AI engineer: builds RAG and agent pipelines, but rarely owns how the result looks and feels to the user.
  • Full Stack UI/UX & AI Engineer: connects all three, from the first wireframe to a deployed feature with AI inside.

What my workflow looks like

A typical feature goes through the same steps, and I stay responsible for each of them:

  • Discovery: the business goal, the user and the riskiest assumption.
  • UX and UI in Figma: user flows and wireframes, then a design system with tokens.
  • Frontend: Next.js, React, TypeScript and Tailwind CSS, built from those tokens so design and code stay in sync.
  • Backend and data: Node.js or Python, PostgreSQL with Prisma, REST or GraphQL APIs.
  • AI layer: OpenAI or Anthropic APIs, streaming responses, tool calling, structured outputs, agents with human-in-the-loop checks.
  • Release: CI/CD on Vercel, AWS or a VPS, plus Core Web Vitals, SEO and analytics.

Where AI meets UX

An AI feature is only as good as its interface. Users need to see that the model is working, understand what it can and cannot do, correct it when it is wrong and trust the result. Streaming text, clear loading and error states, editable suggestions and visible sources are UX work, not model work.

That is why I design the AI interaction together with the prompt, the context and the API. The assistant on this site is an example: the same person designed the chat window, wrote the backend route and tuned how it answers.

When one engineer is enough and when you need a team

One Full Stack UI/UX & AI Engineer works best for MVPs, internal tools, AI features inside an existing product, landing pages and web apps where speed and consistency matter more than parallel work. You get one point of responsibility and no losses between handoffs.

A team is the better choice when a product needs several workstreams at once, deep specialisation such as training custom models, a large native mobile app or round-the-clock operations. Even then, I can be the person inside the team who connects design, frontend and AI.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a real job title? Yes. Companies hire for it under names such as Design Engineer, UX Engineer or AI Product Engineer. The idea is the same: one person who both designs and builds.

Do you replace a designer? For many products, yes: I design the UX and UI in Figma myself. For brands that need illustration or a complex visual identity, I work with partner designers.

Which AI models do you work with? Mostly the OpenAI and Anthropic APIs through the Vercel AI SDK, plus embeddings and vector databases when a product needs search or memory.

How to work with me

If you need someone who can take a product from an idea and a Figma file to a working application with AI inside, write to me on Upwork or through the contact page at https://vynnychenko.dev/contacts/. Describe the task, and I will suggest the shortest path to the first working version.
